Family travel in Tunisia

For those who love travelling but have a family, it can be tricky at times to find locations that offer options that interest both adults and children. However, Tunisia is a great location for families looking to explore a new country. Tunisia offers an abundance of activities for people of all ages and stages of life. Tunisia offers beautiful beaches, historical sites, desert activities, hiking options, etc that can fit into anyone’s itinerary no matter what their age. In this article, I am going to touch on a few places in Tunisia that are great for families to visit and should be included in their travel itinerary when visiting the country. I unfortunately won’t be able to highlight every family-friendly location in Tunisia but these are some of my personal favorites and places where my family and I enjoyed visiting over the past several years that I have lived in Tunisia.

Friguia Park- The premier zoo in Tunisia, Friguia Park is located near Enfidha and boasts lots of different types of animals and attractions. You can easily spend a few hours exploring the park with your family and enjoying the different animals that are residents here. Other attractions at the park include a sea lion show and camel ride. There is also a playground for kids to enjoy and burn off some energy. The entrance fees are very affordable for families as well so you can have a good time with your family without burning a hole in your pocket.

Oudhna This archaeological site, located only 30 km outside of Tunis is another great spot for families travelling to Tunisia. Oudhna, which has only been excavated in the past 25 years or so boasts a stunning Roman amphitheater, ruins of various Roman villas, and the Oudhna capitol building which offers stunning views over the surrounding countryside.  This site’s location in the countryside makes it a great spot for kids to run around and explore while their parents learn about the history connected to these ancient Roman sites. Oudhna is also a popular location amongst locals for picnicking.

Djerba Explore Park- This interactive park is located in the tourist city of Midoun located on the island of Djerba. Entrance tickets at Djerba Explore Park allow you to enter the 3 sections of the park- the Lalla Hadria Museum, the heritage park, and the crocodile farm. The crocodile farm is a great attraction for kids as it boasts hundreds of crocodiles for kids to look at and observe. There is also a specific section in the farm where kids can look at baby crocodiles and learn how they hatch. The heritage park is also a fun family expedition as it displays what traditional life on Djerba looked like in the past. The heritage park contains various exhibitions of traditional island life- from basket weaving, traditional farming methods, traditional clothing, and many other things.

Tozeur- Tozeur is considered the most popular tourist city in the south of Tunisia and offers great activities for all ages of travelers. One of the popular spots to visit that is great for families is Onj Jemel and its Star Wars film set that featured in the film The Phantom Menace. Kids will have a great time running around and exploring this film set and its surrounding sand dunes. Some other great family activities in Tozeur include Ras El Ain Park, which offers camel and horse rides to children, and Chak Wak Park which is located in the heart of Tozeur’s beautiful oasis.

Sahara Desert- A must visit for all people coming to Tunisia, the Sahara Desert offers activities for singles and families alike. For those wanting to visit the Sahara Desert, there are several options to camp out in the middle of the desert in traditional Bedouin tents. These campsites are accessible by either camels or four wheel drive vehicles so visitors are free to choose if they want to travel in style and comfort or reach their campsite in the more traditional way. Many of these camping experiences include local traditional music and a traditional meal prepared under the stars at your campsite. One of the most delicious parts of the meal is the traditional bread that is baked under the desert sand. For travelers looking to visit the Sahara Desert, there are various expeditions heading out daily from Douz and Ksar Ghilane. Contact us at STG Travel Tunisia and we can help book your trip to the Sahara and to the many other family-friendly sites in the southern part of the country.
